District 65 was born on the 25th june 1980, after breaking away from District 45 (Fife).   It was known as Highland District, but a name change came about in June 1995 dist meeting and we decided to call ourselves Col.Cleland Memorial, as we had a close affiliation with the Covenanter and Williamite history in our area.   We chose the name of William Cleland who led his Cameronian Regiment of Covenanters to victory at the famous Battle of Dunkeld   on August 21st 1689 and thus secured Scotland for King William.   Col Cleland lost his life in the battle and is buried in the nave of the ruined Cathedral, our District hold a memorial service in his honour on the Sunday nearest the 21st August.
